Mission for Marygold By Jacob Page Greg Healey will have a personal mission of his own when he pays his respects to fallen Anzacs at Gallipoli next month. He will lay a poppy on a wreath at the request of Marlborough identity Marygold Miller, who died last month aged 94. Mrs Millerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s husband was a spitfire pilot during WWII and her father, Wilton Rix was part of the Lancashire Fusiliers which saw active service at Gallipoli during the First World War. Continued from page 1 Mrs Miller was best known in Marlborough for her 15-year fight to get a pedestrian crossing near Ashwood Park Residential Village on the busy Middle Renwick Rd, which was opened last December. She also played an integral role in keeping the Earnslaw twin screw steamship operational in Queenstown. Mrs Miller wrote to Mr Healey 12 months ago asking if he would pin a poppy honouring her family ties to both World Wars when he went to Gallipoli. He accepted and the two started

a friendship through Mr Healey’s passion for spitfire planes. “She was a lovely woman dear, old Marygold and we got on extremely well. “We had some nice times together. “She used to show me all the photographs of the war and working in the ammunition factory over in England and we became friends. “There was a piece of board her father brought back from Gallipoli that was in her living room. “It was more of a sign that was used over but it meant a lot to her.”

“I was with her a week before she died and she gave me this memorial she wanted me to take over that she had made.” The Picton Quilting Club has produced a memorial for her husband. Mr Healey has a great uncle who died in Belgium during the First World War and he visited his grave last year. The 68-year-old says it was an honour to fulfil Mrs Miller’s wish and he was thrilled to be one of seven Marlburians chosen off a ballot to go to Gallipoli for the 100th Anzac Day commemorations.

The one that cod away Story and photos by Celeste Lodewyk Organisers of the Renwick Arms Country Club Fishin’ Competition were thrilled with the event held at the weekend, saying this year’s number of entries was the best yet. Club manager and organiser Alan Ferguson was all smiles as he watched children and adults eagerly lining up to have their fish weighed. “Look at the grins on the kids faces, everyone seems to be enjoying themselves which is what this competition is all about,” he says. This was the fifth year the competition has been run by Alan and with a record number of entries, 167 men, women and children, he says it continues to grow. The Sun was on hand at the start of Sunday’s weigh-in to capture some of the early entries. Four-year-old Rowan Watson and his siblings arrived brimming with excitement, clutching their buckets of spotties and eels. Not far behind them were Alan and Philip Johnson and Roger Winter. Alan hauled out his 27.7kg thresher shark and when asked where it was caught, he grinned and said he wouldn’t give the location away.

Strong support for smokefree cars By Celeste Lodewyk There has been plenty of positive feedback from the community on the Sun’s story ‘Smokefree cars’ published February 20. Last month Marlborough Cancer Society health promoter Teresa Goza voiced her desire to see legislation introduced banning smoking in cars with children. If it was to come into law, Teresa says it could be policed alongside other actions including bans on mobile use while driving. Support for a local push toward smokefree cars has also come from Kaikoura Electorate MP Stuart Smith. Stuart told the Sun, on a personal level he couldn’t see why people should smoke in cars with children. “Who wouldn’t support being smokefee in cars, it makes perfect sense.”

Asked if there had been talk in parliament about potential legislation, Stuart says none he had heard of. “Police have a lot on their plate, I doubt if this would be a high priority for them. “People should want to do the right thing themselves, rather than being forced to do it. You would just end up with people with a bad attitude toward it,” he says.

To ban smoking in cars could be fruitless as the parents or care givers would almost likely also smoke in the home. Education is the more logical approach and on the whole is having a good affect. Everything we disagree with does not need to be banned or legislated against whether its smoking or other unhealthy habits or practices. It would be great to have New Zealand smoke free by 2025 but not at the expense of maybe allowing other habits to become more liberal or legal.”

James Macdonald were happy with the fruit harvested, and say if the hot weather continues the bulk of the harvest will kick in very soon. “We have been sampling today and it looks like harvest will be pretty soon,” James says. “Normally there is a little break between the first picking and the main harvest, but this year it might be sooner,” Inus adds.

CAR NOT ABANDONED The owner of the ‘abandoned car’ featured in Friday’s Sun last week is in fact not abandoned. The owner contacted the Sun to say due to a number of reasons the car had to be left parked on the road by her driveway on Howick Road. The battery had gone flat, the registration was on hold and while she is not currently driving it, it is still in her possession.

PELORUS SOUND STUDY Marlborough District Council, the Marine Farming Association and the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) are working together to reveal the reasons for long-term ecological change in the Pelorus Sound. Scientists are to begin a new study looking at changes in the sound over the past 500 years.

DRIVER NABBED Police in Marlborough have been able to take action as a result of information from members of the public over the weekend. A driver in Marlborough was reported to be driving erratically and crossing the centre line by several people. A passenger in a following vehicle was able to record the driver’s actions and guide Police to intercept the vehicle. As a result the driver has been charged with dangerous driving.

Hot, dry days for February By Jacob Page Statistics released this week show what has been obvious to most Marlburians, February was sunnier, warmer and drier than normal. Data from the Blenheim Meteorological station located at the Grovetown Park campus of the Marlborough Research Centre shows Blenheim had 23 more sunshine hours last month than it did 12 months ago. Sunshine hours rose to 264.4, up from 241.4 in February 2014. January had 35.8 more sunshine hours than for the same month a year ago. Just 15.2mm of rain fell in February, down from 18mm 12 months ago and far less than the 38mm Blenheim had in February 2012. Daytime temperatures were warmer than the historical average but minimum night are early morning temperatures were slightly cooler than average. Soil moisture in the topsoil (0-35 cm) at the Grovetown Park weather station averaged 14.9 percent for February 2015. This is essentially bone dry. With the small amount of rainfall during the month (15.2 mm) spread across four rain events, soil moisture hardly fluctuated. W h e n o n ly t h e b e s t W i l l d o !

More water restrictions to come

Water restrictions are likely to be ramped up in Marlborough townships this week with domestic water supplies under increasing pressure in Renwick, Picton and Havelock. Renwick is facing sterner restrictions on water use for household irrigation with the town’s second bore on the verge of being shut off. “At the moment, its touch and go whether we lose it but if that happens Renwick will be down to one bore and people will be asked to stop hosing lawns and gardens altogether,” says Marlborough District Council operations and maintenance engineer Stephen Rooney. Havelock residents should expect some restrictions to be imposed this week. Salinity levels in the Havelock water supply were still rising and getting very close to the threshold where restrictions would be necessary. The MDC is also asking Picton households to do more to save water. The Speeds Road wells which are currently the sole source of the town’s water supply are beginning to show signs of being under

pressure. “The Speeds Road wells have started to drop and we really need people to be more rigorous about saving water. Otherwise stricter restrictions will be inevitable,” says Mr Rooney. The Council has been receiving an increasing number of inquiries from property owners seeking water and getting reports that private wells are dry or dropping fast. About 10 contractors now have Council permits to carry water in Marlborough; half a dozen more than usual. Some are transporting water from private wells to other properties but others have sought permission to draw from urban Blenheim hydrants. At present, Mr Rooney says tankers are carrying about 300 cubic metres a day from the Blenheim water supply to customers who need water for domestic, stock or crops. “Council monitors that water-take but at this stage the quantities being drawn are negligible compared to Blenheim’s daily use of 23,000 cubic metres and its having no impact on that supply.”

Deer poachers rife Deer poachers are about in Marlborough’s backcountry usually operating with spotlights late at night under cover of darkness. In mid-February, Marlborough Police received reports of five wild deer carcasses found on the roadside in the scrub near the intersection of Waihopai Valley Road and Summerlands Road. “The carcasses had been cleaned up with some of the choice meat cuts having been taken ie. back steaks and hind legs,” says rural constable Beau Webster. “We’re eager to get information about these carcasses.” In another incident, police received a copy of CCTV footage of a vehicle on the east coast suspected of poaching.

However he says everyone in Marlborough should now be thinking carefully about domestic and commercial water use and exercising discipline. “We need everyone to understand that water conservation is necessary because we don’t know how much longer this dry weather will last.” Groundwater levels on the Wairau Plains are at historic lows but are remaining steady for the meantime. Council hydrologist Val Wadsworth says last week’s light rainfall did give a slight lift to the rivers but those water levels are now dropping again. Irrigators using water from the Wairau, Waihopai and Awatere rivers had brief respites, but as predicted, levels fell quickly back to the previous low flow levels, so those drawing from the Wairau and Waihopai rivers are now again under restrictions. “The Awatere River fared slightly better, and class A and B are currently still available, although class B is likely to be unavailable within the next couple of days,” he says

It is illegal under the Arms Act to have a loaded rifle in a vehicle and to discharge a firearm from a vehicle and/or on a public road. Fines for poaching have been increased recently to two years imprisonment or $100,000 maximum. Loss of a firearms licence is also a likelihood. Rural people should immediately ring 111 if poachers or other suspicious activity is noticed.

Blenheim on KRA’s flight path Kiwi Regional Airlines (KRA) has announced plans for regular passenger air services between a series of regional centres in both North and South Islands, including Blenheim The flights will commence towards the end of 2015 or at the start of 2016, initially with two aircraft, and later with a third; to be flown by SAAB 340 34-seater aircraft – a twin-engine, twin-pilot, pressurised aircraft. All flights will be subject to regulatory approval. The starting point of one route is ‘North Shore’ and will be flown from Whenuapai airbase, subject to RNZAF approval and other consent processes. The joint military-commercial use of RNZAF facilities is already wellestablished at Blenheim, and Whenuapai itself was such a joint facility for nearly 20 years until 1965. Three routes are planned initially, but KRA Chief Executive Ewan Wilson says “approaches from, and discussions with other regional centres show there is a greater demand, and we are actively considering other possibilities.”

Riverside rethink

Where are the cicadas? Dear Ed, Sunday night news mentioned the lack of cicadas in Wellington. I could ask someone if they have missed the monarch butterfly and the white one. I talked to some people from Kaikoura. They had brought a lot of swan plants, I said you won’t get many monarchs on them, and I told them about what’s happening here. Dear Ed, Does Blenheim need the riverside precinct? I think too much emphasis is being put on a riverside precinct - probably at the cost of destroying the hub of shops that work very well at the moment. If the end result is to shift the main hub of the town down by the river it will kill some of the little businesses that exist, and we will be left with a lot of empty shops. If you want an example of this, go and visit Dunedin, south of the Octagon, you have dozens of empty shops, where once was the main shopping area. Is the consultant who seems to have much of the say on this riverside precinct aware of the level to which the river rises at least once a year after a good downpour. If they are going to dig out the bank just north of the amphitheatre steps, this could cause the water to flood into this area, and if it was low enough even to flow into the town. Before a riverside precinct we need a wider/ or second bridge on the way north out of town. M Stevens

Reply to Blenheim Riverside Precinct Dear Ed, No, I most certainly do not think Kobus Mentz’s $24 million idea for a new precinct would benefit Marlborough. Most residents realise our great asset, the Taylor River, and it is fully used on a daily basis. How much local information was Kobus Mentz given by our council? How much research did our council do before deciding on the proposed site for the library? We have enough meeting rooms, and proposed new meeting rooms at various new buildings now under construction. There are also numerous cafes around the town, which are under utilised, and in a lot cases, closing down. Pedestrian-dominated paths look wonderful on paper, and a nominated bus stop opposite Raupo sounds good in theory. Has thought about people who don’t or can’t drive, people who need large size print books, having to carry books along to the bus stop, been given any consideration. When going to the library the object is to get books, the area outside our existing library is not often used for people to sit and read books. Social open spaces which Kobus Mentz suggested, could especially be used for tourists, and seasonal workers calling their families makes me personally question who the library is for. How about people who drive and have to park cars, will the car parking space proposed be free parking? Or will it be revenue for the council on parking fees and fines? Yes we want a library that is up to date, we want a library for the people of Marlborough. Plan for them and their uses, in the centre of town. There is a large building opposite our library which supposedly will be available when the planned theatre finally is functioning, and hopefully financial. There are plenty of cafes etc around the building. Could the art gallery which we also need go into the old library? Or has our council in all their wisdom had more million dollar plans for these buildings. These buildings are central, convenient for the existing bus stop, and I wonder if they would prove a more economical option. Jean Scott A concerned resident and rate payer.

Skin deep Becoming a tattoo artist requires more than just learning to operate a tattoo machine. It takes a keen eye for detail and the ability to draw, something Blenheim man Jarrad Johl says is an important part of the industry. Jarrad sat down with reporter Celeste Lodewyk to talk about how he went from wanting to join the Police force, to becoming a tattoo artist. Born in Sydney, Jarrad moved to Blenheim with his parents at age four and has remained here ever since. Art was always a strong influence in his life, something he inherited from his mother, he says. “Mum was the arty one, not dad so that was lucky for me,” he laughs. As a kid Jarrad would draw cartoon and animations before getting into more ‘realism’ drawings. “It was usually what ever I was into at the time, Pokemon, Dragon Ball Z. “Actually I still draw some of that now,” he jokes. In his secondary school years at Marlborough Boys’ College Jarrad poured a lot of his effort into art and sport. He still thinks a lot of his art teacher, Mrs Cave-Higgins. “She was awesome, one of my favourite teachers. “I think I did well at art,” he says grinning. “I spent a lot of time in the art room, or out playing sports - they were my main focuses at college.” Tattooing wasn’t actually something Jarrad was too interested in during his teens, instead he had plans to join the Police force. “I was determined that I would get in but when I went for a test in Nelson, I failed because of my asthma. “That was frustrating because I was one of the fittest people there and to lose out to asthma was a downer.” Because he had put his hopes into the Police force, Jarrad had no idea of what to do next. “In the end I looked at tattooing because it was something I liked, I was good at art and didn’t have a problem with blood so one thing led to another and here I am now.” Jarrad approached Black Rose Tattoo Emporium owner Willy Wills who took him on with limited experience. There Jarrad trained in the basics of tattooing before going to a conference in New Plymouth where he says he learned “invaluable skills”. “It was a really great trip, I ended up going with my favourite tattoo artist Matt Jordan who is based in Auckland. “From there I just kept learning, trying to better myself and studying photo realism tattoo art.” This was where Jarrad carved his niche, specialising in realism and custom drawn art. He still does a broad range, he says, from stickmen and war inspired sleeves, to the more quirky designs including

a chicken nugget which he tattooed recently. “You get all sorts of requests. “My favourite style would be the black and grey realism, although I love using colour but not many people want it. “I also like blending images together, it’s more unique and I can create something to suit that particular person. “But ultimately it’s about bringing something different and new to the table, something you wouldn’t see on 10 other people walking down the road.” According to Willy, Jarrad has all the attributes of a great tattoo artist. “You can be a good artist but have a bad attitude, but Jarrad is a good tattooist and a good person.” “I’m very proud of him and think of him as my son,” he says. While there are plenty of laughs and friendly banter in the studio, Jarrad admits there is also a frustrating side to the industry. “When people don’t show up to appointments that can be frustrating, especially when it was a three hour session, but there’s a rewarding side to it too.” Asked if he had any awards to his name, Jarrad says it wasn’t something he was interested in. “Putting awards under my name won’t change my art so I don’t enter any.” Outside of work Jarrad plays a lot of sport, ranging from football through to indoor netball, and is looking forward to his up and coming tour of Europe with his girlfriend.

Memories of good deeds

Triumph of motor glory at Omaka By Jacob Page Robert Giboney admits his 1970 Triumph TR6 spends a fair chunk of its time in the garage of his beach house north of Auckland. However, a Tr iu mph we ekend i n Marlborough organised by the Omaka Classic Car Club proved too tempting to pass up “I’ve had it for five years and I imported it from Australia. “It’s an English car but imported to Australia and then came to New Zealand. “I’ll certainly be driving it back to Auckland. “It doesn’t get a lot of use it really just sits

in the garage of my beach house just north of Auckland.” The car is in near perfect condition both on the body and the interior. Mr Giboney says he purchased the car that way five years ago. “I had an early model Austin Healey before this but I decided on a Triumph because it had wind up windows and more creature comforts.” It was one of more than 60 Triumph cars on show during the weekend around Marlborough.

By Jacob Page Marlborough Red Cross branch president Stella Robb is amazed what treasures of history can hide for years in people’s houses. Stella has already found some precious, historical items from the Red Cross’ time in Marlborough and she is hoping for more to add to a Marlborough Museum exhibition. The event will be launched on March 9 as the Red Cross celebrates 100 years in New Zealand. Stella says more memorabilia would be greatly appreciated. She has already received nurses uniforms and army uniforms from world wars and conflicts. “The piece de resistance so far has been this (certificate) in recognition of devoted service to the cause of humanity during the Second World War signed by King George and Queen Elizabeth, the Queen mother. “The woman who brought it in sat through two meetings and came up afterwards and asked if this would be of any use to the exhibition. “We were in shock,” Stella says. “Apparently it had been in her mother’s house for Red Cross Marlborough branch president Stella Robb with Red Cross memorabilia some time.” Stella says more than 250 volunteers donated so far. around Marlborough help with meals on principles of the organisation had not wheels, transport support, employment changed in 100 years which had helped help and first aid training, amongst others. its longevity. Free river crossing and wader saFety training course – Sunday 8 March

Drowning in our abundant outdoor aquatic playground still remains at a concerning high level in New Zealand, and to this end Water Safety New Zealand are funding qualified river crossing instructors to run free training courses. The course consists of approximately 2 hours of theory. In the afternoon there will be a practical session on the Wairau River for 2-3 hrs, with the aim to be finished by 3-4pm. What you need to bring: Wear what you would usually wear when you are fishing/white baiting/undertaking your chosen water-sport. You will get wet, so bring a towel and a change of warm dry clothes. Bring your lunch and if you have a thermos, bring it for after the practical session – you might want a warm drink to warm yourself up! Food challenge inspires kids Story and photos by Celeste Lodewyk Juicy fruit kebabs and moreish kale crisps were just a few of the healthy treats being prepared by children in Marlborough last week, as part of the 2015 ‘5 + A Day’ challenge. Renwick Playcentre and Leaps and Bounds Early Learning Centre invited the Sun along to see the food preparation, games and physical activities that were part of their challenges. Leaps and Bounds Early Learning Centre teacher Kylie Ballantine says last year the centre won its challenge, winning a months worth of produce, so their aim was to win again this year. “It’s been another great

challenge this year, incorporating physical exercise, a picnic in the park and a three course healthy lunch. “We have had a lot of parent involvement and the kids really enjoyed helping to prepare the food,” she says. At Renwick Playcentre’s Friday session parents helped the children to pick kale that was growing in the centre’s garden, as well as cut up fruit and vegetables before sharing it for morning tea. There were plenty of smiles, and sometimes grimaces, as the children tasted each food item, while parents shared their own recipes with one another. More photos on page 14.

Ride the Hunger for Golden Mile colour

Several Marlborough wineries have joined forces to promote the area as a cycle friendly destination. ‘Ride Marlborough’s Golden Mile’ connects 10 cellar doors within 6km in the Rapaura/Renwick area. The destinations are: Hans Herzog; Vines Village (Eradus Wines, Fudge Factory); No1 Estate; Giesen Wines; Wairau River Wines; Forrest Wines; Framingham Wines; Gibson Bridge Wines; and Seresin Wines. The concept was conceived by cycling enthusiast Jeff Fulton from The Vines Village, a bike-friendly destination set among surrounding Marlborough cellar doors and surrounded by straight flat roads. “We are working as a collective of neighbouring cellar doors, accommodation and bike hire businesses to actively promote the Rapaura/Renwick area as a cycle friendly destination. We are all open 12 months of the year and currently the seasonality of Marlborough makes winter a quieter time. As Marlborough is consistently one of the top recipient’s of maximum annual sunshine hours we see winter cycling as an opportunity for visitors to enjoy the province,” Fulton says. Bikes can be hired from businesses on site at The Vines Village and range from BMX’s to eurocruisers. The campaign will be launched on Sunday, March 8 from 1pm at The Vines Village. Bring your own bike or hire on site. There will be a medal ceremony at 4pm for those finishing The Golden Mile.

Susan says the can drive will make a huge difference to families in need as demand is always high for these goods. “We rely on donations from events like this and they are certainly all well received,” Susan says.

Paddon and Kennard set for Rally Mexico By Jacob Page New Zealand rally ace Hayden Paddon and his Blenheim-based co-driver John Kennard are set to battle the heat, altitude and long stages of their second World Rally Championship (WRC) event of the season Rally Mexico this weekend The duo had a career-best fifth place at Rally Sweden earlier in February and Paddon says he’s looking forward to being back on gravel, the surface with which he’s most familiar, in his regular No 20 Hyundai i20 WRC car. “It will be good being back on the gravel, but our biggest challenge is that this will be our first time doing this event – an event that is relatively unchanged from year to year. “Even though we did race here last year, that familiarity which other competitors have with this route will be a hard gap to bridge. Paddon says his fifth place in Sweden – while stepping into his team-mate Dani Sordo’s car from his usual #20 car due to Sordo’s injury – provided another opportunity to learn and improve. “It was a good learning exercise in that no matter how bad things may feel at the time, you just need to focus, put your head down, try not to make any mistakes and you never know what the end result may be. Fiji unstoppable Fiji is through to the ICC Under 19 Cricket World Cup 2016 in Bangladesh after defeating Samoa by nine wickets in Blenheim, on Friday. This is Fiji’s first ever cricket World Cup and comes after their senior men’s team recently earned a place back in World Cricket League for the first time in two years. Fiji won the toss and sent Samoa in to bat and as has become habit for Fiji, Sosiceni Weileilakeba got them off to a flyer taking two early wickets. Leilani Iu provided some resistance for Samoa after the early onslaught making a good 30. However when he fell to Peni Volavola Samoa collapsed to be bowled out for just 92. All Fiji’s bowlers contributed to the wicket tally with Weileilakeba the pick taking 4-17 from his eight overs earning him the Player of the Match award. Fiji’s opening pair of Tikoisuva and Veitacini put the foot down from the outset in their chase of the small total, reaching the target before lunch off just 17.1 overs to ensure Fiji’s place in the World Cup.

Veitacini was the only wicket to fall for 34 off just 28 balls. “This is the first time a team from Fiji cricket has made a World Cup so I am very proud of that achievement and my players,” said Fiji captain Saimoni Tuitoga.
